Sunday School - Lesson 34
by Jesse Abel
A Study of Eschatology
Revelation 21:1-27
In the flesh we can partially feel the excitement of God with us in Christ, but in our glorified body we will have this excitement in full.
Some Thoughts about heaven
-
God is Exciting – Psalm 16:11
No one has seen God at any time, but in heaven we will be in His presence all the time: Heaven is God's Home and it will one day be our home. Not all of us have experienced an early childhood of peace, security and love, but for those of us who did, they can go back to those young days and have a deeper appreciation of the heaven awaiting us all.
Our Character in heaven
-
We will be exciting – 1 Corinthians 15:51-52
At the present time we carry the bodily clothing of death, we are perishing day by day, but we will be changed, all of us; in a moment, in the twinkling of the eye. We will put on the imperishable clothing of glorification and our clothing of death will be dissolved along with the agony of death as it perishes in Hades.
The People in heaven
-
All of us will be exciting – Hebrews 12:22-23
Heaven will not be a place where we find ourselves complaining or disagreeing with a person with a doctrinal difference. God will straighten out all of our error, cleanse us from everything that causes division or that would develop a clique. There will be God, and there will be folks from the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Angels.
Work in heaven will be joyful
-
There will never be a dull day in heaven – Matthew 25:21
We cannot expect that the things we do on earth are joyful all the time, we may like our job, but there are difficult things, boring things and things that require sincere effort. In heaven we will be able to rule over many things and none of these things will be anything other that joyful to do. In other words – the curse of this earth with be replaced with the presence of God and we will serve to please Him. Revelation 22:3
Our present longings are a distraction of what our soul is longing for:
-
As being a part of creation we groan and labor with the full experience of our rebirth – Romans 8:22
-
Being born again makes us aware that we are not at home with the LORD and the unbeliever has this same longing for eternity as we do, only they are even more distracted then us. Ecclesiastes 3:11
Worship in Heaven
The Book of Revelation makes it clear that there will be massive gatherings of saints celebrating in heaven. This may be that local bodies of saints will come together just as we do in local churches today, and it may be that the whole congregation of heaven will come together on occasion too.
-
Revelation 5:11-12 – Thousands upon thousands
-
Revelation 14:2-3 – Many voices and harps
-
Revelation 19:6 – A great multitude
Worship will be directed at our God who reigns, but worship will involve all of His church. We will still need the church, “The called out ones” and here is the reason. The word “saint” is always found in the bible as a plural word.
We could not call the car that goes by us with music blaring with “hip hop” or “rap” a crescendo; if fact this music would be but a whisper the the doxologies of the book of Revelation. As you scan the book you will find these seven and from what we can see clearly these become increasingly louder.
-
Revelation 1:6 – A Twofold Doxology
-
Revelation 4:11 – A Threefold Doxology
-
Revelation 5:13 – A Fourfold Doxology
-
Revelation 7:12 – A Sevenfold Doxology
In our churches today we like a doxology, we like to end big so here on earth we are rehearsing for heaven. Those that say that they do not like to sing, will be singing in heaven, but there will be a rehearsal for them at some training camp, probably on the top floor of heaven.
