Rhode Island LAN Center Questions:

Can I bring my own computer? / What is BYOC?

BYOC stands for Bring Your Own Computer. As gaming saturates the market and continues mainstream, most players build and covet their machines. We have set up Rhode Island LAN Center as a place to bring and showcase your creation. You won't have to worry about using unfamiliar hardware, setting up configs or loading drivers for your components. We welcome you to bring your rig and set it up here to play with others.

We provide a 19" Mitsubishi DiamondPro Monitor on all stations, Microsoft Internet Keyboard, Microsoft Optical Mouse, Plantronics Headphones and a comfy reclining seat for you. All you need is your computer itself.

What should/can I bring?

Being Rhode Island LAN Center is geared toward a BYOC environment, you may bring as little as your own box, or as many components as you'd like to hook up to your own box. We use headphones over speakers in the LAN environment to keep noise distraction to a minimum.

On rental machines you may plug your own mouse, keyboard and headphones in, as well as any gamepads or joysticks.

What are the specifications of the computers I can rent?

You can check out our rentals on this page.

What internet connection do you have?

Rhode Island LAN Center has a tier 1 full T1 to allow the lowest, steady ping possible for all your internet gaming. And in multiplayer gaming, what is more important than a low ping?

May I surf the web, check email, IM, etc.?

If you are bringing your own computer you may utilize our T1 as long as it doesn't interfere with the network quality of the other players. Surfing the web, checking email and such are welcomed but downloading, uploading large files and illegal activities are not allowed at Rhode Island LAN Center. You may be asked to stop a certain application if it affects the play quality of any other gamers.

RILC is mainly a BYOC LAN because gaming enthusiasts who attend our center have their own beloved computers. We want to give every player every chance to reach their full potential. For this reason, our tournaments will always be Bring Your Own Computer.

This elmininates alien hardware and most frustrating delays. Also, for this reason, upon entering a RILC BYOC tourney, you agree to allow other players to inspect your config files, game shortcuts and running processes, etc.
